No sock left behind

Could someone please tell me where socks disappear to? Is it a common black hole that’s secretly linked to our dryers?

During the Holidays, I went out and bought 2 dozen pairs of socks – black to be exact. I was feeling good about myself.

I had just won the official sock lottery.

Two weeks later, I was down to half my batch. And now I’m down to only a couple.

What happens to our socks? Where do they flee to in the middle of the night, or during the day when we’re off at work? Do they have their own little private island that no one knows about? I hope to one day visit this sock paradise, in which I will be able to find perfect sock-pairing harmony; in which no sock is left behind, or neglected at the bottom of a drawer; in which we can all live freely, barefoot, and never have to worry about losing our socks again.

Learning to slow down… fast!

Why is it so difficult to slow down?

We live in such a rapidly paced environment where everything moves FAST; too fast for my liking, and too fast for us to sometimes handle. Patience is becoming more and more of a dying virtue. Dying because society no longer nurtures or appreciates patience as a humane quality.

Here’s an example of how our society nurtures speed, and how easily I have fallen into its trap:

Given that I, supermom, didn’t have time to cook a four-course dinner this evening, I contently drove my kids to McD’s drive-thru. Yes, I am guilty, but at least I can admit it.

The short story goes: one debit machine at the drive-thru cash didn’t work; second debit machine was down; they asked me to wait in the drive-thru line again! After having sized up the queue and calculated the time it would take for my fries to cool off (90 seconds to be exact), I quickly deduced that it would be a smarter (more challenging, yet effective) idea to walk into the McDonlad’s restaurant with my two toddlers in tow, butt in line and demand that I receive my order. 200 seconds later, we were cheerfully chowing down our lukewarm fries.

My moment of modern Mommy bliss.

But what does this say about us?

We as a society are impatient, hurried, annoyed.

  • We text to get straight to the point, become aggravated and forgetful when our emails are not responded to in under half an hour.
  • Use bullet points to get our point across, and as a tool to keep our readers from going astray.
  • Forget about queues when you can do your banking online, or from the very comfort of your iPhone!
  • Why opt for regular eggs when you have the option to buy larger ones and only have to crack one rather than two?
  • Protein shake anyone? It’s quicker than eating a full on breakfast, and is apprently healthier for you.
  • How ’bout that espresso. Why drink an allonge when time is a runnin’ runnin’ sprintin’?

What can we learn from all of this? Take a chance, and   s  l  o  w   d o w n  to keep your sanity.
